This is during bow season in texas, which you are not allowed to hunt with a gun. The intention of the gun is to put down a wounded animal that could be dangerous after being shot.

i think that it would be ok but in Florida, we are not allowed to use guns at all. We have to give the deer a straight shot to the heart at point blank range and that should do it.
In Idaho that is a big no. I watched a guy jump on a 4×4 bucks back and slit its throat after we tracked it down. He had stuck it in the front leg and it was having a hard time walking…it was impressive but but an idiotic move to say the least. I wish I would have had my video camera for that one.
We carry sidearms mainly for protection against predators….not only do kitties come in to elk calling and bears but now we are dealing with wolves coming into the calls as well.
You must dispatch the animal without the use of any firearm in Idaho during archery season. This is to prevent folks from popping the animal with a firearm then walking up on it and sticking it with an arrow and then telling the wardens that they had stuck it first and shot it after it had fallen.
Quoted from the Texas Parks & Wildlife website.
“Archery and Crossbows…
Only the archery and crossbow equipment prescribed in this section may be used for taking game animals or game birds. Crossbows are not lawful for taking migratory game birds. The prescribed archery and crossbow equipment may be used during any general open season. Archery and crossbow equipment may not be used to hunt deer during the Muzzleloader-Only Deer Season. It is unlawful to be in possession of a firearm while hunting with a broadhead HUNTING point during the Archery-Only season, except a person licensed to carry a concealed handgun in Texas may carry a concealed handgun. NOTE: A firearm may be possessed in camp, in a motor vehicle, or while hunting lawful game other than whitetail or mule deer and turkey (e.g., exotics, feral hogs, squirrels). “
I don’t think you could legally do that in Texas. You are not even allowed to possess a deer that has been hit by a car and I don’t see an officer buying the I shot it with the arrow then the pistol even though it be true.
I shot one once that ran off about 150 yards and I followed it and shot it again with another arrow. But I know what you mean about the suffering bit. I quit bow hunting because I don’t feel I am accurate enough with a bow. I doubt the deer would be dangerous if you stay clear of its hooves. Most wounded deer are not in the fight mode but the flight mode. If it can run it will run as far from you as possible. If it cannot run then put another arrow thru its chest.

“Waste of Game: A reasonable effort must be made to retrieve all wounded game birds and game animals and they must be killed immediately and become a part of the legal bag limit. It is a violation to fail to keep all edible portions of a game bird, game animal, or fish in an edible condition. For whitetail and mule deer, pronghorn antelope, and desert bighorn sheep, the violation is a Class A misdemeanor.
Retrieval of Game: No person may pursue a wounded wildlife resource across a property line without the consent of landowner of the property where the wildlife resource has fled. Under the trespass provisions of the Penal Code, a person on a property without the permission of the landowner is subject to arrest”
No. When you are bowhunting, the only weapon you are allowed to have in your posession in the field is the bow. If the animal does not die with one arrow, you may use another arrow for the kill. Under no circumstances are you allowed to carry a bow and a gun into the field.
Cam’s reasoning behind the law is correct.
I don’t think you can most states will not allow you to carry a handgun or rifle while engaged in Archery Hunting Activities I know in my state you are not allowed to have them and if you do have them and get caught with them you will be sighted for several things including Poaching all I can tell ya is Practice, Practice, Practice and so that you can eliminate the chances of just wounding one if you do hit one and it don’t die don’t chase it let it go for a ways and get sick and lay down your recovery rate will increase and you won’t have to worry about trying to finish it off without a handgun
It has been 10 years since I last hunted in Texas. Back then, you were not allowed to carry a gun during bow season. If you were bow hunting during gun season, you could have a gun and could use it if you wanted to.
Well it really depends on the season. If you are bow hunting in the general season and you shoot a deer with a bow and it does not die then it is ok to shoot a deer with a oiston. On the other hand if you are bow hunting during Bow season and you shoot one and it does not die then it is against Texas Parks and Wildlife regulations to shoot one with a firearm of any type.
Nope, I dont know of any state that allows you to carry a firearm during bow season. How are they to know you didnt shoot it first, and then put a arrow in it?
If you shoot a deer with your bow and it runs off then stay put for at least 15-30 minutes!!! This will allow the deer to bleed out and die, if you go after it then its most likely going to run. All you’ll be doing by going after it too soon is making more work for yourself and disrespecting your quarry.
Some people say , if you take a good shot than you dont need to worrie about finishing off your deer,,,,,,well Thats not always true, ive hit some deer really and truly in the pump house and still had to finish them off. In some states you can not have a firearm while bow hunting, So I think this comes down to the laws and ethics ( caution……ethics are the right thing to do and not what the law is ) The history on using a gun is this- – - The so called sportsman would use the gun to drop the animal and than put the arrow through the deer, well you know as well as the rest of us that this is the wrong way to hunt and they need to be slapped, So in short It really hurt the rest of us sportsman who try to do things the right way. I am all for ending the suffering of a wonded animal. I know some hunters that do carrie a 22 mag pistol just for this reason, One good shot in the ear with a mag will end it rather fast. I feel it should be up to the hunter to use this tool and not the state. Im also not saying break the law,,,,,,its a matter of ethics to me, I will not let a animal suffer !!!!!!!!
