I am going Elk hunting in a National Forest in Idaho. Do I need to check in somewhere before I start hunting?

I seem to recall reading somewhere that you must check in with a park ranger before hunting in a national forest. That was decades ago, and I cannot find anything anywhere on the internet that suggests that I do so, but I just want to be safe. Can someone help?

HA!!! As though everyone is going to fall in with all the PETA mindless propaganda!!! Go hug a tree!!

Sorry bout that. Now to your question.

I have never heard of being required to check in with a ranger before hunting a national forest. It may be that specific forests have such check stations, but to my knowledge, I don’t think it’s necessary.

your best bet for an answer is to call the local state fish and game office for the area you are hunting in their phone number should be easy to find on the internet.
local fish and game officals are the most over looked resource for hunters new to an area. they can give advice on where to look for elk, where to camp as well as local places to eat or get supplies…
